MICHAEL KINGDON

Michael Kingdon spent most of his younger years catching pan-sized trout from Exmoor streams. After discovering sea trout and an occasional salmon on tributaries of the River Taw he was lost to the world of work as a succession of career directions led back to the riverbank, until family had him overthrown, just for a while.

Life in the West of Ireland saw years spent teaching environmental subjects and writing on the natural heritage of County Mayo, where he now works on various conservation projects. When not fishing or guiding others he is taking photographs or cooking his catch.

He lives (in a state of perpetual wonder) beside Lough Carra, ‘that most lovely of all lowland lakes’, where his goal is to cast a long line, one more time, into another summer dawn, and at least catch sight of that big trout that kept him out all night.

Loose Lines: On Game Fishing in County Mayo is his first fishing book. Should heavy rain keep him long enough at home, there may be another.
